Fostering with The Foster Care Agency

Support and Training

TFCA offers a very attractive training programme to foster carers, with courses that are relevant to the fostering role. Some courses are mandatory for all carers, this is because you have the responsibility, together with us, to make sure that children and young people in your care are safe and well looked after.

The training programme is reviewed annually. Changes are made based on the feedback received by foster carers, patterns of need and behaviour identified in the referrals we receive and the information collated from the life styles of children and young people looked after.

Attending training will keep your skills up to date and enhance your confidence. You will have opportunities to meet with other carers and exchange points of view and ideas.

TFCA offer online training alongside and access to external training consultants on specific areas of fostering when necessary. We promote a culture of continuous learning within the staff and with the carers.

There are additional ways to develop your learning:

  • Researching and accessing information through a diversity of media.
  • Carer Mentors, who are experienced foster carers, offer advise and support to other foster carers.
Support Groups are held locally for you to discuss issues with social workers and other foster carers from your area.
  • A support services are available to provide additional professional support services for specialist areas of fostering. This could be related to therapeutic approaches or support related to education.
  • he agency offers a membership to Foster Talk to all approved foster carers. This is an independent organisation providing quality professional support.
  • Carer consultations are held annually and attended by Senior Managers to give you and all the other foster carers an opportunity to discuss matters related to local and national issues.
  • Making the most of your supervision visits from your supervising social worker is another way to develop your learning.
